The course will begin by covering Buddhist meta-ethics, i.e., principles of cause and effect, karma and result, dependent origination, mind and mental states, and the relationship between personal and social action.

• Students will gain an understanding of foundational Buddhist meta-ethics.

•Students will be able to apply Buddhist meta-ethics to expand upon Buddhist prescriptive and proscriptive ethics.

•Students will be able to develop well-founded approaches to modern societal ethics issues and problems.

•Students will improve their academic English language reading comprehension.

•Students will develop their academic English language speaking ability.

Content:

The course will begin by covering Buddhist meta-ethics, i.e., principles of cause and effect, karma and result, dependent origination, mind and mental states, and the relationship between personal and social action.

The course will then proceed to cover the foundations of Buddhist prescriptive/proscriptive ethics, in particular the five precepts, but also including monastic ethics.

The course will then examine a range of modern society ethical issues, including those relating to living creatures and their wellbeing, to material wealth and possessions, sexual and gender ethics, those pertaining to speech and communication, and recent technological ethical issues.
