The primary goals of the course is that the students improve their English language abilities (in reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and that they learn vocabulary specifically related to Buddhism and Buddhist Studies. They should also develop their understanding of different language-learning methods and strategies.
A secondary goal is that the students gain a greater understanding of the nature and development of Buddhism in English-speaking cultures.
The course will be based on classroom discussions of material the students will prepare as homework. This will include written material such as articles and extracts from books, as well as documentary films. The course will cover a range of topics related to the nature and development of Buddhism in English-speaking cultures, and cross-cultural understanding between eastern and western Buddhism.
