• Students will develop their English language reading skills for Buddhist studies purposes.
• Students will develop their English language speaking skills for Buddhist studies purposes.
• Students will gain and understanding of the history, texts, and doctrinal thought from the Prajñāpāramitā texts and traditions from India to China.
• Students will learn some of the major topics of discussion for English-language studies in this area.
• Students will understand the methodological approaches underlying this scholarship.
• Students will be able to critically engage with this Western scholarship.
• This course covers three main topics that follow an historical and doctrinal line of development.
• The first topic is the development of teachings such as emptiness in the period before the Prajñāpāramitā.
• The second topic is the development of the Prajñāpāramitā texts and how this relates to their teachings.
• The third topic is the issue of 'perception' or 'apprehension' in the Prajñāpāramitā texts, especially the Heart Sutra.
• We will look at a range of English scholarship on these topics, learning key lines of understanding, and also challenges and ongoing problems.
