本課程探討佛法在現代社會的角色，包括對於現代社會所面臨的許多重大課題與挑戰，例如貧富不均、氣候變遷、環境污染、種族或性別歧視、公共政策、社會犯罪、提升身心健康等等，佛法可以提供什麼啟發或智慧。另一方面本課程也幫助學生思考佛法的現代應用或者佛教現代化一些潛在的問題與挑戰。
根據授課目標，本課程內容分成兩部分：1. 佛教與社會公共領域：包括環境、健康與療愈、市場經濟、科技與媒體、政治與公共政策、醫學倫理；2. 佛教現代主義的問題。
